General Instructions
The California Franchise Tax Board only requires that you file for an extension if you owe California taxes. If you are expecting a refund from California there is nothing to be filed, an extension is automatically granted until October 15, 2006 for the filing of your 2005 tax return.
If You Owe...

California accepts payment by credit card through Official Payments Corporation. Making your payment in this way automatically qualifies you for an extension of time to file your tax return until October 15, 2006. You will not need to file any other forms at this time. You can do this either on the web or by telephone.
Official Payments Corporation will accept Discover/NOVUS, MasterCard, Visa or American Express card to pay your personal income taxes. There is a convenience fee for this service equal to 2.5% of the tax amount being charged. The minimum fee is $1.00.
To make your payment and receive an automatic extension of time to file, have the following information ready:
- Your customer service number (CSN) (available now online)
- Your social security number
- Your spouse's social security number (if applicable)
- The first four letters of your last name
- The first four letters of your spouse's last name, if different from yours
- Tax year 2005
- Your home telephone number (including area code)
- Credit card number
- Credit card expiration date (MM/YYYY)
- ZIP Code for the address where your credit card bills are sent
- Jurisdiction code 1555
- The amount you are paying in dollars and cents
Make your payment at the Official Payments Corp. web site.
By Telephone:Use your touch-tone phone to call toll-free (800) 272-9829. At the end of your call you will be given a confirmation number. Write down and save this confirmation number for your records
Pay by Direct Debit:Web Pay lets you pay your personal income taxes online. Simply complete the Payment Request Form to have your payment electronically debited from your bank account. You can use Web Pay to make your extension payment, and schedule the transaction to occur on April 15, 2006.
Using Web Pay you will automatically be granted an extension of time to file your 2005 tax return until October 15, 2006. You will not need to mail any additional forms to the California Franchise Tax Board at this time.

Request an Installment Plan:Can't pay the full amount you owe? Some taxpayers can complete and submit their request for an installment plan online. However, some important restrictions apply:
- Your balance due must not exceed $10,000
- You must agree to pay your balance in 36 months or less
- You must have already filed your 2004 personal income tax return
- Payments must be paid by electronic funds transfer
- Monthly payments must be $25.00 or more
- You must agree to file all future tax returns on time
- You must agree to pay all future tax balances when they are due

If you don’t meet the requirements for an on-line installment agreement you may still qualify for an installment agreement with the Franchise Tax Board.
