General Instructions
The Hawaii Department of Taxation does not require you to file a request for additional time. Hawaii grants an automatic extension until October 20, 2006 to file your 2005 tax return. However, Hawaii does require that 100 percent of your tax liability be paid on or before April 20, 2006 to avoid penalties and interest.
Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:
Those who pay 100 percent of their amount due on or before April 20, 2006 will only be charged interest on the unpaid balance. Those who pay less than the required 100 percent may also be charged a penalty if the balance is not paid by June 20, 2006.
- A Late Filing Penalty of 5 percent of the total tax due for each month or part of a month that the return is late, up to 25 percent.
- Interest is accrued at the rate of 2/3 of 1 percent for each month or part of a month on unpaid taxes and penalties.
- A Late Payment Penalty may be charged of 20 percent of the taxes not completely paid by June 20, 2006.
If You Owe...
If you owe additional Hawaii Income Taxes you may pay your estimated balance due in the following ways:
Pay with check or money order:- Prepare an Application for Automatic Extension Payment Form N-101A (click here to download PDF)
- Enclose a check or money order in the amount of the estimated tax due.

Pay by Direct Debit or Credit Card:
You can submit your request for an extension online and pay your balance due by Direct Debit (electronic check) from your bank account or by credit card at the Hawaii Department of Taxation web site at http://www.ehawaiigov.org/efile
If You Do Not Owe...
If you are expecting a refund from Hawaii there is nothing to be filed. An extension is automatically granted until October 20, 2006 for the filing of your 2005 tax return.
