South Carolina Extension for tax year 2005

Tax Year 2005

General Instructions

The South Carolina Department of Revenue requires that you file for an extension whether or not you owe additional taxes at this time. However, if you do not owe any additional taxes the state will accept the Federal extension in lieu of a South Carolina extension.

South Carolina automatically grants a four month extension of time to file until August 15, 2006. To avoid penalties, South Carolina requires that at least 90% of your total tax liability (or 100% of your 2004 tax liability) by April 15, 2006 and the balance with the filing of your return.

Note: If your Adjusted Gross Income exceeded $150,000 in 2004, you must pay 90% of your 2005 tax liability or 110% of your 2004 tax liability to avoid a penalty.

Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:

In all cases, interest will be charged from the date the tax should have been paid (April 15, 2006) until the date of payment. Any unpaid portion of the final due will incur interest at the prevailing federal rates. In addition, the state may assess the following penalties:

  • Late Payment Penalty. South Carolina may assess a late payment penalty of 0.5% (0.5%) per month to a maximum of 25% of the outstanding balance if you do not pay 90% of the tax due with the filing of your return.
  • Failure to File Penalty. If you do not file your return by August 15, 2006, you may be assessed an additional penalty of 5% per month up to 25% of the balance due.
