General Instructions
The District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue only requires you to file for an extension of time to file if you owe additional taxes. An extension of time to file can be obtained by filing Form FR-127. The District of Columbia offers a six month extension until October 15, 2006 for filing your 2005 tax return.
To avoid penalties and interest, the balance due on a District of Columbia return must be paid by April 15, 2006. Filing for an extension does not extend the time to pay your taxes. A late payment penalty and interest may still apply if your tax liability is not paid on or before April 15th.
Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:
- There is a 5% per month penalty for failure to file a return or pay any tax due on time. The penalty is calculated on the unpaid tax for each month (or fraction thereof) that the return is not filed or the tax is not paid. The maximum penalty is an amount equal to 25% of the tax due.
- You will be charged interest of 10 percent per year compounded daily, on any tax not paid on time. Interest is calculated from the original due date of the return to the date when the tax is paid.
