General Instructions
The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department automatically grants a six month extension of time to file until October 15, 2006 if you are filing for a Federal extension. Simply check the box on your completed New Mexico PIT-1 indicating that you filed for an Automatic Extension with the IRS
You are only required to file for a New Mexico State extension, if you are NOT applying for a federal extension. Without a Federal extension, New Mexico generally grants a 60 day extension of time to file.
To request an extension of time from New Mexico :

- Do NOT enclose a payment with your extension.

To avoid interest and penalties you must pay your current year tax liability in full by April 15, 2006 and submit your New Mexico return by October 15, 2006.
Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:
IRC (Internal Revenue Code) rate will be charged on any balances remaining after April 15, 2006. In addition you may be subject to the following penalties:
- Penalty for Late Filing or Late Payment. If you file late and owe tax, or if you do not pay your tax when due, you will be charged a penalty of 2% of the tax due for each month or part of a month the return is not filed or the tax is not paid, to a maximum of 20%.
If You Owe...
If you owe additional New Mexico Income Taxes you may pay your estimated balance due in the following ways:

- Enclose a check or money order with the voucher.

You can pay your tax by Direct Debit (electronic check) or credit card using the department's online system at: https://ec3.state.nm.us/trd/estimate/
You'll be asked to enter your Social Security number, date of birth (and your spouse's Social Security number and date of birth, if filing a joint return), your credit card number and expiration date, or your bank routing and account numbers, and the date you want the amount withdrawn from your account.
If You Do Not Owe...
If you do not owe any additional New Mexico taxes, or are expecting a refund, you can obtain an automatic extension to file your 2005 return in the following ways:
